Ascending to 14,410 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier stands as an icon in the Washington landscape. Join me for two nights and three days of photographing Mt. Rainier National Park, during some of the best conditions imaginable. During our stay, we will be photographing during peak wildflower season, on August's new moon, during the peak of the biggest astrological event of the year, Perseid meteor shower. An unforgettable combination of what makes this area so diverse and beautiful. Sleeping under the stars never sounded so good!
After we set up camp, our adventure begins with an evening drive around the mountain to one of our beautiful sunset destinations. Peacefully taking in our surroundings while learning the fine points of landscape and still-life photography. Learn how to read your scene, study the light, select the right lens and dive into creating a compelling composition that accurately conveys the natural beauty that surrounds us. The following day, we will be backpacking into our second campsite and dive even deeper into the landscape. After the sun sets and the stars come out, we will continue our lessons into astrophotography and prepare ourselves for what should be the best night of the year to look into the sky.
Exploring from sun up to stars out, this workshop is going to be epic! The adventure runs from Saturday, until Monday evening. Sunday night is the peak of the Perseid Meteor shower and a big trip highlight we won't want to miss.
We will leave Portland in the early hours of Saturday morning. Our campsite will be nestled in the foothills of Mt. Rainier with plenty of peaceful space and shade to relax. We will arrive with time to set up camp, eat some dinner, and head to the park to create some incredible images of our first sunset!
The following morning we will catch the sunrise at Reflection Lakes where the colorful skies compliment the perfect reflection of the mighty Mt. Rainier. Surrounded by wildflowers, this scene is like a painting. For our second night, we will backpack up the mountain to avoid the crowds and find our own little piece of meteor shower heaven. Our hike will begin at Mowich Lake, through Spray Park and over to Cataract Valley to make camp. This hike will be 5 miles in each direction. We will always try to control the pace so it is pleasant for everyone and assign a good time for each hike so we will not be in a rush.
PLEASE NOTE: You will be responsible for carrying everything you personally need to our desired location. That includes food, water, shelter, and camera equipment. A more detailed list will be sent out upon sign-up.
Fitness Level: Important
Hiking in these areas is extremely rewarding when it comes to photography. Its an essential aspect of this trip, and truly a way to give you a unique perspective. You need to be able to carry all your camera gear, food, shelter, water, and clothes. Most of the hike does not have a steep ascent but can still be demanding. You are the only person who will be able to judge if you are up to it or not. Everything worth doing is worth fighting for. Trust me, it'll be worth it!
We do not set out a specific course guide as we will react to the conditions we are presented with on the day. Rain or shine, the adventure continues! The most beautiful things in life, happen for the shortest amount of time.
